Shantadurga Temple

Located 33 kilometers away from Panaji, the Shantadurga temple is dedicated to the Goddess Durga who meditated here to stop the fierce war going on between Sri Vishnu and Sri Shiva. She is known in this monument as Shanta-Durga as she maintained Peace (Shanti) between the two most powerful Gods in the Hindu mythology.

This avatar of Jagdamba Devi who came to make peace between Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva came to be called as Sri Shantadurga Devi. Initially the idol was located at Keloshi from where it was shifted to Kavelam after the advent of the Portuguese in Goa. This monument was built between the years 1713 to 1738 AD. Over the years the monument has seen many renovations that still reflects the original beauty of the monument.
